What is a septic tank?

A septic tank is installed underground and consists of a chamber which allows waste water to drain and decompose. The tank typically consists of polypropylene.

How does a septic tank work?

Wastewater travels through a drainage pipe leading to the septic tank which then holds it until the solids settle to the bottom and insoluble materials (e.g. grease) sit on the top. The wastewater then exits the tank and is discharged into a soakaway or treatment plant. The waste (solids) remain inside the tank and will undergo some decomposition via anaerobic methods, however this offers very limited treatment and the tank will need to be emptied to prevent overflow.

How often does a septic tank need emptying?

This depends on the volume of the tank and the solids going into it. There is no set time, however on average this is typically every 6-12 months.

What is the difference between a septic tank and sewage/water treatment unit?

Put simply, septic tanks separate wastewater and solids, whereas sewage treatment units offer some level of waste treatment by circulating air with a pump. Hence, the water that leaves a sewage treatment unit/ plant is cleaner compared to the water that exists a septic tank. Septic tanks are not compliant if they discharge directly into a ditch, stream, river, lake, or pond for this reason.
